GUIDE

How much does a website cost in 2026?

A plain-English guide to website prices for small businesses: what you pay for, what makes a site cost more, and how to avoid overpaying.

Updated October 8, 2026  |  4 min read

Quick answer

Most small business websites cost somewhere between a few hundred dollars and a few thousand dollars to build. Do-it-yourself builders sit at the low end, freelancers and small studios in the middle, and large custom agency projects can reach tens of thousands of dollars.

On top of the build, every website has running costs: a domain name, hosting, and some maintenance. For a small site these can be quite low each month.

The rest of this guide explains where those numbers come from, so you can tell whether a quote is fair.

What published price guides say

Price guides disagree a lot, because they measure very different projects. A few recent examples:

  • Shopify (2026 guide): prebuilt themes from $0 to around $400, and custom design and development from about $1,000 to well over $100,000.
  • Elementor (2026 guide): a professional website anywhere from about $150 to $50,000, depending on who builds it and what it needs to do.
  • Elegant Themes (2025 guide): most WordPress projects between roughly $200 and $7,000.

The pattern is the same everywhere: the low end is a template you set up yourself, and the high end is a large custom build by a big agency. Most small businesses land somewhere in between.

Cost depends on who builds it

  • Do it yourself with a website builder. The cheapest option in money, the most expensive in time. Good for a simple page to get started.
  • A freelancer. Prices vary widely with experience. You usually get the design and the build, but SEO, content and support depend on the person.
  • A small studio. Design, build, SEO setup and support from one team, often with a clear process and a fixed quote.
  • A large agency. Strategy, research, custom development and big teams. Right for complex projects, but usually beyond a small business budget.

What makes a website cost more

  • Number of pages. A one-page site costs less than a site with a page for every service.
  • Custom design or template. A design made for your brand takes more time than adjusting a ready-made theme.
  • Features. Online stores, booking systems, member areas and multiple languages all add work.
  • Content. Writing the text, editing photos or making videos is real work. Ask whether it is included.
  • SEO setup. Page titles, descriptions, speed and structure help Google find your site from day one.
  • Deadline. A rushed project often costs more.

The running costs people forget

  • Domain name: your web address, renewed every year.
  • Hosting: the server that keeps your site online, usually paid monthly or yearly. A recent US guide from Bisup puts the cost of running a small site at roughly $2 to $15 a month.
  • Maintenance: updates, security checks and backups. See our guide to website maintenance costs.
  • Growth: SEO, new content and ads, if you want more visitors over time.

What about online stores and redesigns?

Online stores cost more than a simple business site, because every product needs a page and the checkout, payments and shipping all need to work perfectly. See our ecommerce website design page for what that work includes.

Redesigns can cost less than a new build when your content is already good, but they need care: every old page should be redirected to its new address so you keep your Google rankings. Read more on our website redesign services page.

How to avoid paying too much

  1. Know your goal. More calls, more bookings or more sales? The goal decides which pages you really need.
  2. List your must-have pages and features before you ask for quotes, so every quote covers the same thing.
  3. Ask what is included: mobile design, SEO setup, content, rounds of changes and training.
  4. Ask who owns the site and its files when the project ends.
  5. Check the payment terms and timeline before you start.
  6. Compare value, not just price. A cheap site that brings no customers is the most expensive one.
